BERMEX™ Furniture Made in Harmony with the Environment

As we celebrate Earth Month in April, the team here at Custom Home Interiors wants to sing the praises of some of our favourite suppliers, who are leading the way in sustainable development and environmental protection, in addition to designing products that we love.

BERMEX™ is one of the most important manufacturer of solid wood chairs, tables and bar stools in North America with more than 143 different finishes and colours and more than 190 fabrics and leathers. With five styles of furniture, from contemporary, transitional and traditional to American and French Country, the design options are endless ensuring the furniture we select for our projects has its own distinct look and personality.

Being a wood furniture manufacturer you can understand the crucial role of trees in BERMEX™ business. If the supply should shrink or disappear, their business would be in jeopardy. In order to minimize the chances of this happening, they have championed many initiatives to preserve the environment.

BERMEX™ exclusively uses solid North American birch in the manufacturing of their high-quality furniture. Only the best pieces of this wood−known for its exquisite beauty−are used. To sustain this process and ensure the renewal of this precious resource, BERMEX™ plants one new tree for every tree used in the manufacture of their product.

Because they control everything from the raw wood to the finishing of the furniture in their five factories, every possible effort is made so the wood that is cut away during production of BERMEX™ furniture is used for creating marketing tools or other items.

Residues coming from various products used by the finishing department are 100% recycled by CHEMREC; and shipping processes are structured to minimize carbonic gas emissions as well as fuel consumption.

When Custom Home Interiors chooses BERMEX™, we know that we are choosing products that offer an optimum life span while contributing to protecting our environment for future generations. And, we love that BERMEX™ is a Canadian company, based out of Maskinongé, Québec.

EGLO Lighting Saves Energy and Money

As we celebrate Earth Month in April, the team here at Custom Home Interiors wants to cast a light on some of our favourite suppliers, who are leading the way in sustainable development and environmental protection, in addition to designing products that we love.

EGLO is one of the global leaders in decorative lighting solutions for residential purposes. They are a trendsetter on the mass market with numerous patents and new products every year. We choose many of their LED lighting products for our projects because in addition to being beautifully designed, they save on energy and money and avoid using hazardous substances like mercury.

Sustainable development and environmental protection are central to the vision and values of EGLO. Their products are made using only recyclable and environmentally friendly materials and as little packaging as possible; and used packaging is disposed of properly, and according to regulations.

The company headquarters are located in Pill, Austria. It is heated by an environmentally-friendly pellet heating system and lit mainly by LED lighting which saves additional energy. They have updated the insulation of all older buildings to the state of the art, and in the new buildings, they pay special attention to the energy balance. A decentralized warehousing system means that transportation distances are as short possible to help reduce their environmental footprint even further.

By designing products with LED technology and championing environmental protection, EGLO is encouraging customers all over the world to reduce their environmental impact as well. LED light bulbs are energy efficient and long lasting, which means customers save on energy and money, while also preserving valuable resources and eliminating the use of hazardous substances like mercury.

Custom Home Interiors loves EGLO products and the company’s values. We feel good about using their products and know that our clients and the planet will benefit from us choosing EGLO.

CHI Team Attends GOHBA Curling Bonspiel

Custom Home Interiors entered a team in the 2017 GOHBA Curling Bonspiel presented by Enbridge. The four-member squad included Craig Steeves, David Skinner, Tyler Dren, and Carlie Harnish (pictured here l to r). Of the four, only Tyler had curled before, and his experience was limited to this tournament in previous years.

The event consists of two guaranteed matches in a round robin style tournament, lunch, knock out rounds, and a dinner at the Nepean Sportsplex. With approximately 15-20 teams taking part, it is a jam-packed day.

Our novice curlers discovered hidden talents or benefited from beginner’s luck and pulled off a tie game, which they lost in sudden death and a win in their second match. It was not a bad showing at all, and they are feeling inspired to return next year and better this result.

More importantly, they had a lot of fun. Whereas most industry events we attend are more about networking and making new contacts, this event is an opportunity to do some team building. It is nice to get out of the office and have some fun doing something different; especially when we have been so busy and everybody has been working so hard.

A huge thanks to the Greater Ottawa Home Builders Association and Enbridge for putting on another fantastic event this year. We look forward to participating again in 2018.

One Day at Las Vegas Furniture Market

by Tyler Dren

I was recently in Las Vegas, Nevada on vacation with my wife this past January. It happened to coincide with the Las Vegas Furniture Market, the most comprehensive furniture, home décor and gift market in the Western United States, so we decided to tag an extra day onto the trip to attend.

The Las Vegas Furniture Market is one of the two big industry trade shows — High Point being the other — that you hear about constantly in our business. I had been wanting to get to this one but the timing never worked out until now.

This market features a unique cross-section of 4,000+ resources in more than 5 million square feet of product resources across 40 showroom floors and in 600 temporary exhibits. It would take two to three days to get through all of it, but you will find most of the same vendors at both markets. So, I made the most of the day I had to focus on strengthening existing relationships with vendors I had connected with at Highpoint Furniture Market and discovering a few new ones.

Among buyers from all 50 states and some 80 other countries, presenting housewares, seasonal and casual/outdoor resources, a few products and companies stood out for me.

A company by the name of Bluworld of Water, based in Orlando, Florida, designs, builds, installs and services water features, products, and systems. Water walls have become an increasingly popular feature in common areas of buildings, and we were impressed with what they had to offer.

We discovered Moe’s Furniture, a company with a distribution division in the Greater Vancouver Area. They design modern and contemporary furniture for kitchens, dining rooms and bedrooms, but what we loved most was their cool condo-size upholsteries.

Las Vegas Market Winter 2017 was their largest winter market ever in terms of overall attendance and brands represented, reflecting the health of the industry. We have already started using a couple of vendors that I connected with one this trip, so it was definitely a successful market for us as well.

Sunpan Offers Unique and Versatile Products for Commercial and Residential Settings

Sunpan is one of our preferred furniture manufacturers. A fast-growing, global furniture company, based in Toronto, Ontario, they specialize in the design and manufacture of transitional and contemporary furnishings from hard goods and dining to upholstery and art.

We were first introduced to Sunpan’s products through the High Point Market in North Carolina and the Canadian Furniture Show (formerly The Canadian Home Furnishings Market) eight years ago, and we have been working with them ever since.

We like working with Sunpan products because they are thoughtfully designed and crafted by renowned international designers to create a unique and versatile line of products that suits our business’ commercial and residential project needs and budgets.

101494The ultra-contemporary Gotham collection is a popular choice for our interior designers. We have furnished several projects with the Gotham occasional chairs and console tables (pictured here), which are constructed of high quality stainless steel and clear tempered glass.

If you ever get the opportunity to attend the High Point Market or the Canadian Furniture Show, be sure to check them out. They have a state-of-the-art 20,000 square foot showroom in High Point that is open during the annual Spring and Fall Markets.

We recently attended the Fall 2016 Market where their showroom inspired visitors and showcased the latest trends like brown marble; dark, rich tones; stunning antique brass, timeless golds and modern stainless steel finishes; and beautiful, functional pieces like end tables and hassocks in animal hides.

The Sunpan showroom was definitely a “show-stopper” and they shared some of the best highlights in their blog. Check it out!

Sarah Kidder Spots 5 Design Trends for 2017

With the end of the year just days away, I thought it would be fun to take stock of what clients have been asking for recently, what the design magazines are featuring, and what I am seeing at buyer’s markets and in retail stores, and made the the following design trend predictions for the coming year.

1. Interiors Follow Fashion

It’s well known that home fashion trends follow the runway, and 2017 is no exception. Fashion predictions for 2017 include an eclectic mix of styles. Rather than a single decade for vintage resurgence, we saw several — 70’s ruffles and stripes, 80’s neon colours, and the 90’s dark “lipsticked”, denim-clad grunge. No doubt you’ve already seen girls with burgundy-black lipstick everywhere lately. Burgundy is already gaining popularity in the retail fashion market and I expect to see it hit home fashions big time by fall 2017. Overall, I anticipate a ‘free-for-all-no rules’ approach when it comes to mixing patterns, colours and textures. The bigger, bolder, and more unexpected, the better.

2. Coloured Cabinets

I think we’re all a little tired of ultra-common off white or dark wood cabinets so let’s welcome a new age of COLOUR! Thanks to websites like Pinterest and Houzz, clients are more aware of the possibilities when it comes to kitchen and bathroom design and seeing coloured cabinets gives them the courage to step out of their comfort zones in favour of something they truly love. In the last year, I’ve used a variety of colours for kitchen cabinets and bathroom vanities. They tend to fall into soft blues, greens, and grays, as these all work as neutrals in softer schemes as well as in ones with pops of bolder colours.

My favourite non-whites for kitchen cabinets: Benjamin Moore Soft Chinchilla, Heather Gray, Sharkskin, Stormy Monday

My favourite non-whites for bathroom vanities: Benjamin Moore Boothbay Gray, Kendall Charcoal, Gray Wisp, Evening Dove.

3. Rose Gold…sort of

hpmkt-misty-mcfadden-lights
Pantone’s 2016 Colour of the Year was Rose Quartz, and while their 2017 pick is a gorgeous fern green, I’m seeing a more subdued version of 2016’s colour which I expect will carry into 2017. The new rose gold is popping up as a metal in accent tables and lighting, and in textiles and artwork. It’s more mature than the cleaner rose quartz running into either a copper or smokey lavender with muted, peach or dusky mauve undertones, and often used together.

4. Bold, Saturated Colours

Please, no more greige! 2017 is the year to go big, or go home! Rich, saturated wall colours and fabrics rule in jewel tones, Indian spice hues, and deep rich navies and charcoals. Pile on multiple bold colours and you’ve got a space that is dramatic, layered, sophisticated, and most importantly, fun!

5. Fretwork Furniture

I’m loving this trend, and although I feel like this could be a lot of extra dusting, it’s a really interesting way to jazz up an otherwise staid piece of furniture. The potential patterns, materials and opportunities are endless; from modern lines and geometric motifs, to ornate curlicues, floral, and ethnic patterns.

So go forth and design your home the way you want, with all the pattern, colour, and texture your heart desires. The only rule for interior design in 2017 is that there are no rules.

Have fun and happy designing!
