The Madero Square dining table is an example of the interesting pieces that have been created for SunPan. The base of the table is inspired by a group of tree trunks sprouting from the ground. It gives this beautiful table an organic feel while still keeping it modern with its clean lines. This beauty of a table can seat up to 8 adults comfortably. It is part of an entire collection that also includes a rectangle dining table, a bar table, a sideboard, an end table, coffee table, console table and even desks!

Another one of our favourites here at CHI is the Hanover Chair. Also from SunPan Imports, its graceful arms and legs give this armchair an elegant but contemporary look. Many fabrics are available for this extremely comfortable chair – it is shown in the standard fabric – beige cotton linen. This collection also boasts a coordinating sofa, loveseat and ottoman.

They have a wide variety of styles from contemporary and abstract, to floral, to landscape, to urban lifestyle and more! I love this piece of artwork from Mercana – Shades of Pale. I love that it has a variety of blues to coordinate with almost any hue you currently have in your space. I love that it has texture to it as well – it gives the painting an entirely different feel than it would if it was two-dimensional.

It was Kermit the Frog who first said it. “It’s not easy being green,” referring to the colour of his froggy skin. But while Kermy’s heart felt ballad is loved by many, there’s definitely a part of his song that I’d have to disagree with; the part where he says,
“It’s not easy being green because it seems like you blend in with so many ordinary things.”
So my question is, what’s so wrong with that? … especially when it comes to “being green” in the environmentally friendly sense combined with the office furnishings industry.
What? Too violent of a turn from Sesame Street songs to office furniture? Wait. Just hear me out.
With the wide range of projects I get to work on at Custom Home Interiors, it’s no surprise that I’m constantly being updated on the latest trends in the design world.
On a recent site visit to a new office space we are renovating, one of my clients expressed the importance of having “green” office furniture and flooring – no VOCs!
VOC = Volatile Organic Compound
My good friend Wikipedia informed me that VOC’s are a large group of carbon-based chemicals that easily evaporate at room temperature. While most people can smell high levels of some VOCs, others have no odor and there are thousands of different VOCs produced and used in our daily lives. Many products we come into contact with on a daily basis contain VOC’s.
- Composite wood products
- Upholstery fabric
- Vinyl floors
People spend 90% of their time indoors where they may be exposed to numerous chemical pollutants.
– Greenguard Environmental Institute
Think about how much time you spend at work. If you’re a business owner, do your employees get sick often? Do you have proper air circulation in your office or does the space always have that ‘stale’ feeling?
As I strive to find suitable solutions for my clients needs, I am happy to share some suggestions that can make “being green” easy. (Sorry Kermit but it IS possible).
- Rip up that old dirty carpet!
Instead, try some of CHI’s Bamboo flooring – a sustainable resource and it looks great too.
- Pay attention to the products that go in to making up your cubicles, desks and other office furniture.
Be on the look out for those nasty VOC’s. There ARE options like the DE line of products (we have at CHI) who meet the Green Guard Certification criteria as a manufacturer.
- Paint Green!
I don’t just mean the colour. Our C2 eco-friendly, LoVo line is available in 496 richly pigmented colours.
You see! Being “green” and being able to blend in with so many ordinary things is a GOOD thing.
If you’d like more information on making your space more friendly to the environment and yourself, shoot me an email. 🙂
This week’s blog focuses on summer gatherings. As the weather warms up, we take the entertaining outside. Here a few of our favorite things for partying on the patio!
• Find a comfy seat! Fatboy’s “Buggle Up” outdoor bean bag chair is rain, stain and UV resistant and perfect for lounging in the backyard! Available in a multitude of colours to suit everyone’s taste!
• Think versatility! Outdoor Chinese stools (from Wisteria) on the patio are great for extra seating and table space. When the weather turns cold, they work well as accent tables in a bedroom or living room.
• Multi-purpose crate! This model (from Wisteria) features compartments that are great for glasses, cutlery, condiments and bottles. Garden chic and practical!
• Tasty drinks! Make sure you have all ingredients on hand to whip up a signature drink for your summer parties. Check out this yummy recipe, a spin on the traditional pina colada, from the LCBO’s Food & Drink mag. The “Banana Colada” is sure to get your taste buds watering!
1 oz spiced rum
½ oz banana liqueur
1 banana, chopped
3 oz pineapple juice
¼ cup Piña Colada mix
1. To a blender, add 1 cup ice, 1 oz spiced rum, ½ oz banana liqueur, 1 banana, chopped, 3 oz pineapple juice and ¼ cup Piña Colada mix.
2. Blend thoroughly and pour into a tall glass.
3. Serve with a long straw.
•Easy appetizers! Food that can be eaten with one hand; kabobs, shrimp skewers and bite size appetizers are great. After all, you will have a “Banana Colada” in the other hand!
The key to a successful summer party is a laid back atmosphere, great music, tasty food and drinks and good friends!
What are you looking most forward to at your warm weather gatherings?

In December, Pantone, “the world-renowned authority on color” announced the 2011 Colour of the Year…
This bold, energetic hue can easily be incorporated into your wardrobe and home décor. It is fresh and upbeat, reminding us of the sunny days of summer. It is popping up on the runways, in stores and homes. It is stimulating and intense, just the change we need after months of dull grey skies!
This uplifting hue, a reddish pink, can be sophisticated too! Don’t automatically attach this colour to cupcakes and ponies. See a few tips below on how to incorporate this fun, refreshing shade into your everyday life in a grown-up way!
• In the kitchen, add linens and small accessories in this fun shade
• Add throw pillows to your sofa and bed for a punch of colour
• Paint nails or swipe the colour on lips for a fresh look
• Upholster an accent chair in elegant velvet, instant “notice me” effect!
• A bright pair of pink flats or clutch are the perfect summer accessories
• For men, try a fun honeysuckle coloured tie with a neutral grey suit
• Paint a wall in the living room this shade; it will pop against any neutral!
• Pink peonies add a cheery burst of colour without making an investment
• Panel drapes will add whimsy and demand attention in this colour
Visit Custom Home Interiors to find fabrics, paint and wallpaper in this shade. Embracing this bold hue will add liveliness and freshness to your space!
Every year CHI welcomes an Algonquin College 2nd year Interior Decorating student to learn the inner workings of the company. This year, Sarah Whetter joined the team for her co-op placement. See what she had to say about the experience!
Right from the beginning I knew my experience at Custom Home Interiors as a co-op student was going to be a unique and enriching one. After assisting with a seminar set up at their main showroom located on Thurston Drive early last year, I decided that I needed to learn more about CHI. The products and services that they offer was unlike anything I had seen in the Ottawa area previously!
Through a little serendipity, I was invited to their grand re-opening gala after visiting their incredible booth at the Home and Design Show last fall. Again, I was blown away with their level of care and commitment to their clients, other industry members and the unique line of products and services that they offer. I applied to their co-op position a few weeks later and began my placement in early March. From day one have not stopped being amazing by the level of commitment and passion from every member of the team at CHI.

CHI Grand Re-Opening Fall 2010
At the beginning of my placement I was asked to write about what I wished to learn during my time at CHI, I found this has meant that I am getting a tailor made placement experience. This is very typical for CHI as they are all about the clients’ wants and needs. Ensuring I get the best experience possible seems to be a priority for all employees, which not only helps me learn how the business works quite quickly, but also makes me feel very cared about and valued as a student just stepping into the design world.
One thing that continues to impress me is Custom Home Interior’s willingness to continually seek out new and better products and services so that they can always offer their clientele the latest and greatest at the best value. They will also take on projects of any size, no matter how big or small. It could be a powder room make-over or the outfitting of an entire retirement complex.
2nd year Algonquin College Student – Interior Decorating Program
Custom Home Interiors strongly supports the Algonquin Interior Decorating Program. Director of Sales & Marketing Andrew Emmans currently sits on their advisory committee. Many of CHI’s empolyees have graduated from this program.
It has been a pleasure having Sarah as a honourary member of the CHI family. Her positive attitude, enthusiasm and hunger for learning has been contagious.Tags: Algonquin College, co-op placement, Custom Home Interiors, decorating, designing, fatboy, learning, lisabel, student

The bathroom is often one of the most outdated areas in the home as it is not a highly visible area. But by tearing down the outdated wall paper and updating those mustard yellow fixtures, the value of your home can increase significantly. So why not unveil the hidden potential that exists in your bathroom!
Minding your budget, you can choose to renovate your bathroom in one go, or work on it in stages. Either way, here are some helpful tips to make the most out of your bathroom space!
• The variety available in tiles today is endless. Ditch the linoleum and install a beautiful porcelain tile for the floor, such as the one seen below. This tile has the look of a linen suit, gorgeous and unique!
• A fresh coat of paint goes a long way! Think “spa atmosphere” and work with muted colours. Some of my favorites from C2 include “Seraph”; a pale, soft grey, and “Parchment”; a warm fawn shade.
• Replacing the fixtures will make a huge difference. The standard builder fixtures do not add any “sparkle” to your bathroom. Consider the two sink faucets below. Which one would you choose?
Lighting can make a world of difference in the bathroom! A chic pot light in the shower and over head vanity light complemented by simple wall sconces make it easier to see when shaving or applying makeup.
• Small details and accessories go a long way, adding a sensible and aesthetically pleasing touch. A stylish teak bench in the shower, glass apothecary jars on the vanity and a storage unit for towels marry practical and pretty!

The bathroom should be a retreat. Update this space to make the most of it now for your own use and to attract potential buyers for the future! If you are considering a bathroom renovation in your own home, visit Custom Home Interiors Showroom & Design Center to “ignite your imagination”!
Say it with me, “Ahhhhhhhhhhhhh”.

Industry. Tyler highlighted that much of the success that CHI has enjoyed is down it’s most valuable asset, it’s employees.
Now how can’t you have a party without a BIG CAKE!
Congratulations to the Directors of Custom Home Interiors. What was once
an idea from a business competition, is now an 8000 sq. ft reality.
